Agartala, 14th May 2026: In a case marked by cross-border coordination and legal formalities, the body of missing youth Nityananda Malakar was repatriated to India on Thursday through the Monu Land Customs Station, bringing a painful closure for his family in Kailashahar.
The transfer was carried out jointly by officials of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh Police, and Indian authorities, including Kailashahar Police Station OC Tapas Malakar and DCM Hemanta Dhar. Family members of the deceased were also present during the handover process.
Nityananda Malakar, around 30 years old and a resident of Ward No. 15 in Durgapur area of Kailashahar municipal region, had gone missing on May 9 after reportedly leaving home with two acquaintances, Montosh Malakar and Bijoy Num. His sudden disappearance triggered concern, leading his family to lodge a missing person complaint at the local police station.
Despite repeated inquiries, the two individuals who had last contacted him reportedly denied any knowledge of his whereabouts, deepening the uncertainty surrounding the case.
The situation took a turning point when reports emerged on social media about the recovery of an unidentified body from the Monu River area under Kulaura Police Station in Bangladesh. Acting on this information, the family initially suspected it could be Nityananda, a claim later confirmed through official legal procedures and identification.
Following completion of formalities, the body was handed over at the border checkpoint and brought back to Indian territory on Thursday evening. Family members later formally identified the deceased.
Police officials stated that the post-mortem examination will be completed before the body is finally released to the family for last rites, while further investigation into the circumstances of death remains ongoing.
