Public Protest Erupts in North Tripura Over Road, Water, and Power Issues

Date:

Agartala, 25th May 2026: Tensions flared once again in the Makumchhara area of North Tripura as residents staged a road blockade on the Kanchanpur–Laljuri–Dharmanagar main road, protesting against long-standing civic issues.

North Tripura witnessed renewed unrest on Monday when locals from the Makumchhara area came out in protest, blocking a key highway connecting Kanchanpur, Laljuri, and Dharmanagar.

The protesting residents alleged severe neglect of basic infrastructure, highlighting the poor condition of roads, shortage of clean drinking water, and irregular electricity supply. Despite repeatedly bringing these issues to the attention of the administration and local representatives, they claimed that no permanent solution has been implemented.

Locals said the situation worsens significantly during the monsoon season, when broken roads become nearly impassable, causing major difficulties for daily commuters and transport services. Alongside this, persistent water shortages and unreliable power supply have added to public frustration.

During the protest, demonstrators also expressed strong criticism of state minister Santana Chakma, questioning the lack of visible development in the region despite repeated electoral promises.

The road blockade led to major traffic disruptions for several hours, leaving multiple vehicles stranded and affecting normal movement along the busy route.
