SC to hear Atiq Ahmad’s plea on Mar 17

Date:

The Supreme Court on Thursday said it would hear on March 17, Atiq Ahmad’s plea seeking protection, and restraining the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government from taking him from central jail Ahmedabad to Prayagraj or any part of the state of UP apprehending that he may be killed in a fake encounter

Advocate KS Hanif, lawyer appearing for Ahmad mentioned the plea before a bench of the Supreme Court, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, who agreed to hear his plea on March 17.

Ahmad, a five times Uttar Pradesh State MLA, had knocked the doors of the Supreme Court, against his transfer to UP jail from Gujarat in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

Ahmad, in his petition, filed before the Supreme Court, sought directions to the Central and UP government and to restrain them from taking him from central jail Ahemdabad to Prayagraj or any other part of UP.

Ahmad wanted that the UP Police should question him in Ahmedabad, keeping in view his apprehensions that he will be killed in an “encounter”, Ahmad said, in his petition filed before the Supreme Court.

If, at all, he be shifted to UP, for questioning in Umesh Pal murder case, it should be under security of central forces, Ahmad, in his plea said.
