Surrendered militants’ forum calls off blockade after assurance from minister Bikash Debbarma

Date:

Agartala, 4th June 2026:   The Tripura Guerrilla Returnees’ Demand Committee (TGRDC), a joint platform of surrendered militants, has decided to withdraw its proposed rail-road blockade following assurances from the state government.

The blockade, originally planned for June 5 to coincide with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit, was intended to press for five demands, including comprehensive rehabilitation measures.

According to Director of Tribal Welfare Subhasish Das, a meeting chaired by Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma was held with representatives of the returnees earlier this week. “Their concerns were discussed in detail, and the government assured them that the issues would be addressed,” he said.

On the rehabilitation demand linked to the Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission, Das explained that while the Rubber Board initially sanctioned 30,000 hectares for plantation—later expanded to 69,000 hectares—the funding was not proportionately increased. “We have approached NABARD for additional funds to implement the expanded project,” he noted.

Officials further confirmed that a follow-up meeting involving relevant departments and representatives of the surrendered militants will be convened on June 9 to deliberate on livelihood and rehabilitation solutions aimed at ensuring long-term stability.
