Agartala, 6th June 2026 : Responding to a wave of public grievances over healthcare services, State Health Secretary Kiran Gitte conducted a surprise inspection of North Tripura District Hospital in North Tripura on Saturday.
Upon arrival, he was received by Health Department officials before touring the Outpatient Department (OPD), emergency unit, and indoor wards. He later convened a meeting with hospital staff, doctors, Public Works Department officials, and senior administrators, including District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, issuing directives to address lapses.
The visit came against the backdrop of mounting public resentment over alleged irregularities at Dharmanagar District Hospital. Patients had long complained of waiting in queues without receiving services, unhygienic conditions in wards, defunct water purification machinery, and doctors frequently absent from duty while attending elsewhere. Reports also pointed to illicit activities within the premises, blood samples being collected locally but tested externally, and even a lack of basic amenities such as drinking water.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte assured that the government is committed to improving healthcare delivery. He directed District Magistrate Chandni Chandran to take immediate corrective measures and announced several upcoming initiatives, including the establishment of a Sub-divisional Hospital in Dharmanagar, upgradation of hospital infrastructure, full operationalization of a trauma center, launch of an Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU), and expansion of specialized services such as a cancer day-care center.
Observers described the inspection as a significant step toward rectifying the deteriorating state of district hospitals and restoring public confidence in healthcare services.
After concluding his review in Dharmanagar, the Health Secretary proceeded to inspect the Unakoti District Hospital.
