Agartala, 10th June 2026: In a major anti-narcotics operation, Assam Police seized a huge consignment of banned cough syrup concealed inside a truck carrying potatoes from Siliguri to Agartala and detained the driver for questioning.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police intercepted the 12-wheeler truck bearing registration number PB08CX5602 and conducted a thorough search. During the operation, officials recovered 98 cartons containing 14,700 bottles of banned cough syrup allegedly hidden beneath sacks of potatoes.
Police sources estimated the black-market value of the seized contraband at around ₹1.47 crore.
The detained driver, identified as Yogesh Kumar, told investigators that he and the vehicle are from Punjab. He reportedly loaded potatoes in Siliguri, North Bengal, and was heading towards Agartala when the truck was intercepted.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the cough syrup was being smuggled under the cover of the potato consignment. The truck has been seized, and the driver is being interrogated. Assam Police have launched a detailed investigation to identify other individuals involved and ascertain whether a larger smuggling network is linked to the operation.
