Bear Attack: 60-year-old man severely injured

Date:

Agartala, 13th June 2026:   A fresh incident of bear attack has been reported from Bhuvan Choudhury Para in East Simna ADC Village, Sepahijala district. On Saturday morning, 60-year-old Lalit Debbarma was severely injured after being mauled by a bear. According to local sources, the animal bit into the upper part of his left leg, tearing away flesh, and left multiple injuries across his body.

With the help of BSF personnel, the injured man was rushed to Katlamara Primary Health Centre, where doctors administered 8–10 stitches before referring him to Agartala for advanced treatment.

Residents allege that the same bear has been roaming freely for months in Darogamura, Sarat Choudhury Para, and Daingya Bari areas, particularly near the India-Bangladesh border at night. About a month ago, the animal had attacked a woman in Daingya Bari, leaving her bedridden with serious injuries.

Local resident Rakesh Debbarma said repeated complaints to the Forest Department have gone unanswered, and no steps have been taken to capture or relocate the bear. He demanded that the department bear Lalit Debbarma’s medical expenses and warned that if villagers are forced to kill the animal in self-defense, no legal action should be taken against them.

With consecutive attacks, fear and tension are mounting in border villages. Residents are now pressing for the bear to be captured and moved to a safe location without delay.
