Agartala, 13th June 2026: Left-affiliated youth and student organizations on Saturday staged a sit-in demonstration and protest in front of the Director General of Police (DGP) office in Agartala, demanding a fair investigation into the death of a young woman whose body was recovered at Ranirkhamar Medical College.
The protest witnessed the participation of activists and leaders from the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Tribal Students’ Union (TSU), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), and Tribal Youth Federation of India (TYFI).
Addressing the gathering, youth leader Nabarun Deb alleged that the Amtali Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) had termed the woman’s death a suicide even before the post-mortem report was released. He claimed that such a statement raised serious questions and suggested an attempt to suppress the truth behind the incident.
Deb also criticized the police administration for what he described as its failure to take effective action against the drug trade in the state. According to him, the growing influence of narcotics is contributing to a deterioration of the law-and-order situation and an increase in crimes such as murder and rape.
He further accused the police of negligence in handling the rape case involving a student of Anandanagar School, alleging that adequate action had not been taken against the accused.
The protesters demanded an impartial and transparent probe into the death at Medical College, Ranirkhamar and other incidents raised during the demonstration. They called for the prompt identification of those responsible and strict legal action against the accused.
During the protest, demonstrators raised slogans expressing concern over the state’s law-and-order situation and urged the administration to take immediate steps to address the issues.
