Agartala, 15th June 2026: The Melaghar police on Monday achieved a major success in the ongoing anti-narcotics drive across the state by intercepting an e-rickshaw and seizing a large consignment of packaged marijuana. A local tom-tom driver was detained on the spot for his alleged involvement in the smuggling attempt.
The operation called for a swift and tactical intervention. Acting on precise information from confidential sources, a police team led by Melaghar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Asit Bhattacharjee set up a strategic checkpoint and intercepted a suspicious tom-tom vehicle in the Kemtali Molla Mura area.
According to police representatives, the incident took place during a meticulous search of the vehicle when officers recovered more than 14 kilograms of dry marijuana. The contraband came to light after being found tightly packed and carefully hidden inside a black bag to evade the security forces.
Addressing reporters regarding the breakthrough, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Melaghar Police Station raised serious concerns over the expanding drug trafficking networks. He stated that the primary investigation and the nature of the packaging indicate a larger plot to smuggle the contraband out of Tripura into neighboring states.
“This cannot be treated as an isolated transit act. The investigation must determine the source of the contraband and identify the kingpins who facilitated the shipment,” the OC said.
The Melaghar police asserted that any person found to have aided the smuggling network, directly or indirectly, will be treated as an accomplice and prosecuted under the law.
The authorities submitted that a specific case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is being registered against the detained driver, and a thorough probe has been initiated to unearth the entire network.
