Verbal eviction order sparks panic among city shop owners

Date:

Agartala, 15th June 2026:  Allegations of sudden eviction threats have triggered anxiety among electronics traders operating in the Post Office Chowmuhani area of Agartala. Several shop owners have claimed that they were verbally instructed to relocate their establishments within three days, sparking uncertainty about their future.

According to the traders, the Agartala Municipal Corporation had issued notices in the past regarding relocation. However, in the absence of any concrete or permanent solution, they continued their business operations. The situation escalated on Monday when, they allege, officials delivered abrupt verbal directives asking them to vacate the premises within a short timeframe.

The traders argue that such a move, without any rehabilitation or alternative arrangements, would severely impact their livelihoods. Many of the affected shop owners depend entirely on their businesses to support their families, and the sudden directive has placed them in a vulnerable financial position.

Some traders also pointed out that a market shed had been constructed for them during the tenure of the Left Front government. However, they claim that the facility remains unusable or was never properly allocated. Questions have also been raised regarding the role of local BJP leader Sanjay Saha in the matter, though no official response has been received from him so far.

The traders have collectively demanded that the administration initiate discussions and provide a viable rehabilitation plan before implementing any eviction measures. They emphasized that a humane and structured approach is necessary to prevent economic distress among small business owners.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation has yet to issue any official statement clarifying the situation. The silence has added to the uncertainty, leaving both the business community and the public seeking answers regarding the rationale behind the move and the future course of action.

As tensions continue to mount, traders in the Post Office Chowmuhani area are now anxiously awaiting the administration’s next step.
