Agartala, 16th June 2026: Unakoti district, under the Fatikroy Assembly Constituency, has come under scrutiny following allegations of corruption and irregularities in a Rs 32 lakh waterbody renovation project at the Balai Bazar area of Kanchanbari.
According to reports, the Fisheries Department initiated a renovation project covering nearly two hectares of a local waterbody. The work is being executed under contractor Nirmal Das. However, soon after the commencement of the project, a section of local residents raised concerns alleging substandard work and financial irregularities.
The controversy intensified when a delegation of the CPI(M) visited the site and later held a press conference, reiterating similar allegations of malpractice in the execution of the project.
In response to the growing dispute, a four-member team from the Fisheries Department conducted an on-site inspection on Monday. The team included Joint Director Sujit Sarkar, Unakoti district Fisheries Officer Tarendra Debbarma, department engineers Biswajit Das and Manik Das. They were accompanied by local Panchayat Pradhan Shelly Bhattacharjee and other representatives.
During the inspection, local resident Chandan Roy raised several serious allegations regarding the implementation of the project, demanding an impartial investigation.
However, both Joint Director Sujit Sarkar and Panchayat Pradhan Shelly Bhattacharjee dismissed the allegations as baseless. They stated that the project is being carried out strictly according to government guidelines and accused certain groups of attempting to politicize developmental work.
They further added that all procedures have been followed with transparency and assured that work would continue in accordance with official norms.
The situation has sparked widespread discussion in local political and social circles, with a section of residents demanding an independent inquiry into the matter.
