Agartala, 16th June 2026: In a major anti-smuggling operation near the India-Bangladesh border, police recovered 25 sacks of Burmese cigarettes from a dense forest area under the Samrurumukh region of Chandipur Assembly constituency, raising fresh concerns over border security and surveillance gaps.
Acting on a tip-off, personnel from Kailashahar Police Station, along with Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans, launched a joint search operation in the area. After an extensive search in the forest near the border, they discovered multiple abandoned sacks containing large quantities of Burmese cigarettes. Preliminary estimates suggest the seized contraband could be worth several lakhs of rupees in the local market.
The recovery has triggered widespread concern and speculation among local residents, who are questioning how such a large consignment managed to pass through multiple checkpoints, including the Chinibagan police naka point, before reaching a sensitive border-adjacent zone.
No arrests have been made so far, as the smugglers are believed to have fled the area upon sensing the arrival of security forces. The seized goods have been confiscated and transferred to the police station for further investigation.
Authorities have begun a detailed probe to identify those involved in the smuggling network and to determine how the illegal consignment was transported across the border. Officials are examining multiple angles as the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over repeated incidents of smuggling in the border region, urging authorities to strengthen surveillance and enforcement to curb such illegal activities.
