Waterlogging woes at Sonamura: Residents demand drainage overhaul

Date:

Agartala, 16th June 2026:   Even a spell of light rain is enough to submerge large parts of Ward Nos. 1 and 2 under the Sonamura Municipal Council, leaving residents grappling with severe waterlogging. The absence of proper drain repair and maintenance has turned daily life into a struggle.

Locals allege that every year, ahead of the monsoon, councillors and municipal authorities promise drain cleaning and renovation. However, once elections are over, those assurances remain unfulfilled. As a result, courtyards, streets, and even homes are inundated with dirty water during showers. “The drains are clogged with filth, there’s no outlet for water. We live in fear with children at home. Despite repeated appeals to the councillor, nothing has been done. Drain water even enters kitchens and bathrooms,” complained residents.

The stagnant water has also worsened mosquito infestation, raising fears of diseases such as diarrhoea and dengue. Written complaints to the municipal council have yielded no relief. Attempts to contact the ward councillors for comment went unanswered.

Frustrated locals now question whether this year too will be marked only by hollow promises, or if genuine drainage repair will finally free them from the recurring crisis. The residents have urged immediate action to restore the drainage system and ensure proper water outflow.
