Agartala, 21st June 2026: A fresh political controversy has surfaced in Melaghar over allegations that RTI activist Prasenjit Saha was allegedly framed in a cannabis possession case. On Sunday, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman visited Saha’s residence at Thakurpara, Melaghar, and met his family members to express solidarity and support during the ongoing legal battle.
During the visit, Sudip Roy Barman inquired about the family’s condition and urged them to remain patient and continue their fight through legal channels. He was accompanied by Congress leaders Nilkamal Saha, Habil Miah, Deepak Chakraborty, Lakshman Das, and other party workers.
Prasenjit Saha, an RTI activist from Melaghar, was arrested by police a few days ago after cannabis was allegedly recovered from his vehicle. He is currently in judicial custody. However, Saha and his family have repeatedly claimed that he was deliberately implicated in a false case and that the allegations against him are part of a conspiracy.
After meeting the family members, Sudip Roy Barman alleged that Saha was targeted because of his active role in raising questions over alleged irregularities and corruption through the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
“We believe that Prasenjit Saha has been framed due to political vendetta. He used to file RTI applications and raise questions on various issues in the public interest. That is why he has been conspired against and implicated in this case. We demand a fair and impartial investigation and will stand beside his family in their legal struggle,” Roy Barman said.
The Congress leader’s assurance reportedly provided some relief to the family members, who have been seeking justice and a transparent investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, a section of local residents has also demanded an impartial probe into the allegations. The case has drawn political attention, and all eyes are now on the upcoming court proceedings. The outcome of the legal process will determine the direction of the case and whether the allegations against Prasenjit Saha are proven or dismissed.
