BMT Unit, ICU Services to Be Started at Agartala Regional Cancer Centre: Gitte

Date:

Agartala, 23rd June 2026:  The Tripura government is preparing to introduce a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) facility at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala, along with new ICU services and expanded critical care infrastructure.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, who recently inspected the cancer centre along with senior officials, said the visit focused on reviewing installed medical equipment and ensuring that maintenance systems and service contracts are being properly followed so that the machines remain fully functional and reliable.

He noted that the Chief Minister has directed the department to make the BMT unit operational at the earliest. Work is also underway to launch ICU services at the centre, which is expected to significantly strengthen advanced treatment facilities for cancer patients in the state.

During the inspection, officials also reviewed laboratory services and other ongoing facilities. The Health Secretary mentioned that certain minor issues were identified and will be addressed soon, with plans to provide adequate manpower and technical support for smooth day-to-day operations.

The government is also looking to reduce patient load at the state’s main hospital by strengthening day-care treatment services in district hospitals. Medical teams will be sent for training and support to improve services at the district level. In addition, night shelter facilities have been set up at GB Pant Hospital and are expected to become operational soon.

Overall, the expansion plan aims to upgrade cancer care infrastructure in Tripura and improve access to advanced treatment closer to patients’ homes.
