Education Department regularises 6 contractual workers following Supreme Court order

Date:

Agartala, 24th June 2026:    In compliance with a Supreme Court directive, the Education Department on Wednesday issued regularisation orders to six irregular workers who had been serving under the Secondary Education wing as DRW (Daily Rated Worker) employees.

The development comes after a prolonged legal battle initiated by the workers, who first approached the High Court seeking regularisation of their services. However, the High Court upheld the state government’s position, observing that in the absence of an applicable scheme, their regularisation could not be granted.

Subsequently, all six workers, along with two others, filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court. In April, the apex court delivered its judgment, directing the state government to regularise the services of all eight petitioners within three months.

Acting on the order, the Education Department handed over regularisation documents to six of the workers on Wednesday. According to their counsel, Purushottam Ray Barman, one of the remaining petitioners has passed away, while another has retired from service.
