Agartala, 24th June 2026: Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman has taken steps to protect and enhance higher education opportunities for students from the state by seeking the restoration of reserved seats in West Bengal’s government engineering institutions.
During a meeting held at Bikash Bhavan in Kolkata, Barman met with West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay to discuss reinstating seats previously reserved for Tripura students in government engineering colleges across West Bengal, including the Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology at Serampore and Berhampore.
Speaking after the meeting, Barman said that the West Bengal minister responded positively and assured him that the matter would be examined and appropriate measures taken to restore the reserved quota at the earliest.
The Tripura minister noted that the reservation arrangement had been discontinued in recent years, affecting opportunities for students seeking technical and professional education outside the state.
He described the discussions as a constructive step toward strengthening educational ties between Tripura and West Bengal while creating more avenues for students to pursue engineering and technical courses in reputed institutions.
If the proposal is approved, students from Tripura are expected to gain improved access to quality higher education and specialized professional programs in West Bengal.
