Tree collapse exposes disaster mismanagement at Teliamura

Date:

Agartala, 25th June 2026:   Panic struck Gamai-bari in Teliamura late Wednesday night when a massive tree crashed onto the house of Arjun Das, an SPO with Tripura Police. The family narrowly escaped with their lives as part of the house was instantly wrecked around 10:30 PM.

Despite immediate calls to the Teliamura Sub-divisional administration’s disaster management wing, only one volunteer arrived—without tools or equipment—leaving him helpless. Shockingly, several other volunteers with tree-cutting gear were stranded at the SDM office, waiting for transport. With no permanent vehicle arrangement, the team took nearly two hours to reach the site, arriving on motorcycles without helmets.

This glaring delay has reignited public anger over repeated negligence. Locals recalled past tragedies, including the death of lorry driver Mihir Debnath and two workers in a Chakmaghat landslide, blaming poor preparedness. Allegations also surfaced that lakhs spent on disaster drills have failed to translate into real readiness.

Adding to the outrage, DCM Genius Debbarma was absent from the scene, raising questions about accountability. Residents now demand urgent reforms, asking: if disaster management itself is unprepared, who will protect citizens during real emergencies?
