Agartala Apartment Blast Claims One Life; Tripura Govt Forms High-Level Inquiry Panel

Date:

Agartala, 26th June 2026:  Tripura government has set up a high-level committee to investigate the explosion at a residential apartment on Ramnagar Road No. 4 in Agartala, which occurred on June 25 around 12:30 pm and resulted in one fatality.

As per an order from the Urban Development Department, the committee will be led by the department’s Secretary and will include senior officials such as the Director of Fire & Emergency Services, the Municipal Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation, the Superintendent of Police (West Tripura), and the Chief Engineer of PWD (Buildings). The panel has been directed to submit its findings within seven days.

The order was issued by Dr. Tamal Majumdar, IAS, Special Secretary and Director of Fire & Emergency Services.

The victim, Subhrajit Chowdhury, who was critically injured in the blast, died at GB Pant Hospital on Friday. His wife, Reshmi Saha, said he had informed her about a suspected gas leak shortly before the explosion and that he was at his workplace when the incident occurred. She added that he had been performing prayers using incense sticks at the time.

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha visited the blast site and said early indications point to negligence involving TNGCL. He expressed condolences and announced that compensation would be provided to affected families.

Preliminary findings suggest that a gas pipeline connected to the building may have been left open, causing gas to accumulate inside the premises. Officials believe the gas likely ignited when an incense stick was lit, triggering the explosion. The Chief Minister said a detailed investigation is underway and assured strict action against those found responsible.
