Tripura takes a giant leap with flagging off of NE’s first MEMU train, pathway to Vande Bharat: CM Dr Saha

Date:

Agartala, 4th July 2026:   Agartala witnessed a historic milestone on Saturday as Tripura rolled out its first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger train service. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha flagged off the Agartala–Karimganj–Agartala MEMU from Badharghat Railway Station, calling it a landmark achievement that strengthens regional connectivity and paves the way for advanced services like the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Express.

The launch follows the completion of electrification across Tripura’s broad-gauge rail network, making the state the first in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone to introduce an electric MEMU. The 12-coach train, with a capacity of around 3,600 passengers, is equipped with CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking, advanced braking systems, automated passenger information displays, and an air-conditioned driver’s cabin—ensuring faster, safer, and more comfortable travel.

In his address, Dr. Saha recalled Tripura’s rail journey from the arrival of the first meter-gauge train at Dharmanagar in 1964 to today’s electrified broad-gauge expansion. He credited the central government’s declaration of rail expansion in the Northeast as a “national project” and highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Act East Policy as a driving force behind accelerated development. Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, he noted that the completion of electrification from Churaibari to Sabroom has laid the groundwork for future high-speed services.

Looking ahead, Dr. Saha pointed to near-completion of the Agartala–Akhaura rail link with Bangladesh, doubling of the Chandranathpur–Sabroom line, and proposals for new express trains connecting Tripura with Jammu, Puri, and Gaya. He also mentioned ongoing station modernization under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with major investments in Dharmanagar, Kumarghat, Udaipur, and Agartala.

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury hailed the inauguration as “a new chapter in Tripura’s transport system,” emphasizing that the MEMU service will make daily travel faster, safer, and more convenient for thousands of passengers.

With electrification, modern stations, and ambitious expansion projects, Tripura has taken a decisive step toward becoming a key transport hub in India’s Northeast under the Act East Policy.
