DYFI alleges tribal rights under threat, calls for stronger youth mobilisation

Date:

Agartala, 4th July 2026:  The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Saturday alleged that the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in several states are pursuing policies that undermine the constitutional rights of tribal communities while favouring corporate interests, and called upon youths to unite against unemployment, displacement and social evils.

Addressing a press conference here, DYFI All India General Secretary Himagnaraj Bhattacharya said the organisation had witnessed steady growth, claiming that around one lakh members joined in 2025 and the membership rose to nearly 1.25 lakh in 2026. He attributed the increase to DYFI’s sustained campaigns on issues affecting young people across the country.

Bhattacharya alleged that tribal communities have faced exploitation for generations despite constitutional safeguards. He claimed that tribal land, forests and water resources are being taken away in the name of development without adequate rehabilitation, and accused the BJP of weakening the reservation system while promoting policies that benefit large corporate houses.

Highlighting employment concerns, he said Tripura lacks major industries and continues to have a large number of vacancies in government departments, resulting in rising unemployment among youths. He also expressed concern over increasing substance abuse, alleging that some individuals arrested in drug-related cases had links with the BJP.

He demanded 200 days of employment under rural job schemes, alleged that divisive politics was being encouraged in states like Assam and Tripura, and called for inclusion of all tribal people in the census.

DYFI leader Vikas Jha and Assam State Secretary Nirankush Nath also accused the BJP and the RSS of promoting divisive politics and facilitating the transfer of tribal land and natural resources to corporate entities.

Among those present were DYFI leaders Sonamu Tudu, Dhrubajyoti Saha and TYF Central Committee General Secretary Kumud Debbarma. The leaders urged youths to strengthen democratic movements against unemployment, social injustice and exploitation.
