Date:

Agartala, 8th July 2026:   Tripura University has finally filled its long-vacant top post, with Professor Debabrata Das formally assuming charge as the new full-time Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday. His appointment restores regular administrative leadership to the Central University after several months of functioning under interim arrangements.

The official ceremony was held at the university campus in Surjyamaninagar, where Prof. Das took charge in the presence of Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shyamal Das, senior officials, faculty members, and staff.

The post had remained vacant since the departure of former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain, a situation that had affected both administrative and academic activities.

Prof. Das, a distinguished academician and researcher, brings over three decades of experience in teaching, research, and university administration. He has previously served at Rajiv Gandhi University, Gauhati University, and Tezpur University. He has led the UGC’s Special Assistance Programme (DRS-I) and successfully executed multiple research projects supported by UGC, ICSSR, various central ministries, IGNOU, and the Ford Foundation. His academic journey also includes post-doctoral research in France under the Indo-French Cultural Exchange Programme and a fellowship with the Ford Foundation-supported Microfinance Researchers Alliance Program.

With more than 65 published research papers, two authored books, and several edited academic volumes to his credit, Prof. Das has also served as a full-time member of the Arunachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission. Additionally, he completed the Senior Academic Leadership Program at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School under the Ministry of Human Resource Development’s LEAP initiative.

University stakeholders expressed optimism that his leadership and expertise will accelerate academic progress, strengthen research activities, and improve overall institutional governance.
