Agartala, 20th July 2026 : Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead at his office in the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to officials, Dhankar was discovered inside his office and was immediately taken to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where doctors made extensive efforts to revive him. However, he was declared dead after prolonged resuscitation attempts.
Senior Physician at GBP Hospital, Dr. Pradeep Bhaumik, said the DGP was brought to the hospital at around 12 noon with no detectable pulse, blood pressure, temperature or other vital signs.
“Our emergency team immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A team of specialists continued CPR for nearly 48 minutes, but despite every possible effort, we could not revive him. He was declared dead at 12:48 pm,” Dr. Bhaumik told reporters.
Asked about the cause of death, the physician said it could not be determined at the hospital since the officer had no vital signs when he was brought in. He said the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, which will establish the exact cause of death. Responding to questions regarding possible injuries or illness, including dengue, Dr. Bhaumik said it would be inappropriate to draw any conclusions before the post-mortem findings.
Following the medical examination, Dhankar’s mortal remains were shifted for post-mortem at GBP Hospital.
Authorities have not officially announced the cause of death. Although preliminary reports indicate that the senior IPS officer may have died by suicide, officials have neither confirmed nor ruled out any possibility. Police have initiated an investigation, and the exact circumstances leading to his death are expected to become clearer after the post-mortem report and the completion of the inquiry.
The unexpected death of the state’s top police officer has sent shockwaves through the police force and administrative circles across Tripura. Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha along with higher officials of police and civil administration visited Police Headquarters in Agartala.
