Date:

Agartala, 25th July 2026:      Tripura Police of Sonamura Police station have intensified their anti-narcotics drive, carrying out a series of successful operations over the past week that led to the seizure of large quantities of contraband, the arrest of three accused, and the registration of multiple cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

On July 19, acting on specific intelligence, Sonamura Police raided a house at UNC Nagar, Ward No. 3, under Sonamura Police Station and recovered 146 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup from the residence of an alleged drug peddler. A case was registered under the NDPS Act, and two accused were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

During the course of the investigation, police identified another alleged drug peddler linked to the case who had absconded after the incident. He was subsequently apprehended at Kolkata Airport, brought to Sonamura Police Station, and produced before the local court on Saturday with a prayer for police remand.

In another operation, during routine mobile patrolling on the Matinagar border road, police recovered 13 kg of dry ganja abandoned by unidentified persons. The contraband, estimated to have a black market value of around Rs 2.6 lakh, was seized after observing all legal formalities. An investigation has been launched to identify those involved.

In the latest operation conducted on Friday night, acting on secret information, Sonamura Police, in a joint operation with the 81 Battalion BSF and the 11th Battalion TSR, laid an ambush at UNC Nagar’s Tukkar Chowmuhani on the Boxanagar–Sonamura road. The team intercepted a motorcycle bearing registration number TR-07J-4533 and recovered 10 packets containing 20.715 kg of suspected ganja.

A case has been registered under the NDPS Act against the motorcycle rider and pillion rider. The seized contraband is estimated to have a black market value of approximately Rs 4 lakh.

Police said the back-to-backm operations reflect the sustained efforts of the law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking and dismantle narcotics networks operating in the Sonamura subdivision. Investigations are underway to trace the source and intended destination of the seized contraband and identify other persons involved in the illegal trade.
