Agartala, 14th August 2026 : Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Friday said that filing police complaints would not deter him or the opposition CPI(M), accusing the BJP-led government of using its power and administrative machinery to intimidate political opponents.
Sarkar was reacting after three complaints were reportedly lodged with the police against him over a recent remark in which he allegedly said that the country and Tripura could move towards a “militant movement.”
Speaking to reporters, Sarkar said the complaints were politically motivated and alleged that the ruling BJP and the state government were behind the move.
“Today I have seen that a complaint was filed against me. With the help of the ruling BJP and the government, these cases were filed. They cannot subdue or intimidate us. This is a sign of the government’s weakness,” he said.
The former Chief Minister alleged that the actual context and content of his statement had been distorted and presented differently for political purposes.
He maintained that the opposition could not be silenced through legal cases or the use of administrative machinery. According to Sarkar, attempts to suppress political activities would instead strengthen public resistance.
“It is not possible to stop the opposition’s political movement. People will answer for it,” he said.
Sarkar further claimed that political preparations were already gaining momentum among people ahead of the coming days. He said that resistance against the prevailing situation was taking shape at the grassroots level, with people organising and discussing the issue from “house to house” across the country, including Tripura.
