BJP keeps alliance option open with Tipra Motha ahead of Village Committee polls

Date:

Agartala, 16th August 2026 :   The possibility of a BJP-Tipra Motha alliance in the forthcoming village committee elections has gained fresh momentum, with Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha confirming that discussions between the two parties are underway.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Dr. Saha said Tipra Motha remains an alliance partner of the BJP and indicated that the possibility of an electoral understanding cannot be ruled out. However, he made it clear that no final announcement would be made until the ongoing discussions are concluded.

“We are alliance partners. Discussions are ongoing. At this moment, I will not say whether it will happen or not. The matter will become clear only after the discussions conclude,” the Chief Minister said.

Asked whether the BJP’s doors are still open for Tipra Motha ahead of the village committee elections, Dr. Saha replied in the affirmative, stressing that all decisions would be taken through discussions between the alliance partners.

The Chief Minister also referred to the previous ADC elections, when talks had been held between the BJP and Tipra Motha over a possible alliance but ultimately failed to produce an agreement. He said the BJP continues to adopt a positive approach towards its allies.

Dr. Saha’s comments have sparked fresh political speculation over a possible seat-sharing arrangement or broader electoral understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha for the village committee polls.

However, Tipra Motha founder and former royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has set a clear condition. During a live social media broadcast, he stated that he would not enter into an alliance unless the tripartite agreement is implemented.

Against this backdrop, attention is now focused on the ongoing negotiations and whether the two alliance partners can reach a common ground before the village committee elections.
