Agartala, 19th August 2026 : The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out a major search operation at two locations linked to a trader in Agartala on Wednesday, with central security forces deployed during the proceedings.
The operation began in the early hours at the residence of Shahjahan Miah in the Western Club area along Akhaura Road. At the same time, another ED team searched his business establishment at Bottala Fitting Market. Officials remained at both locations for several hours and questioned Shahjahan during the operation.
According to sources, the searches were conducted following allegations of suspicious financial transactions and possible dealings involving foreign funds. The agency is also reportedly examining information concerning Shahjahan’s alleged activities in areas close to the international border.
Sources said the ED had been keeping a watch on his movements for several days before launching Wednesday’s operation. The sudden arrival of the central agency, accompanied by security personnel, reportedly caught local authorities by surprise.
During the searches, ED officials examined documents and other materials at the trader’s residence and shop. While no significant cash or other major items had reportedly been recovered till Wednesday afternoon, sources claimed that some documents were taken for further scrutiny.
Speaking to reporters, Shahjahan Miah said he did not know the reason behind the ED searches.
The agency has so far not issued an official statement detailing the allegations or the scope of its investigation. Officials are reportedly examining the documents collected during the searches to establish whether the trader has any connection with suspected financial irregularities or cross-border activities.
The searches at both the residence and business premises were continuing till Wednesday afternoon. Further details are likely to emerge once the ED completes its preliminary examination and assessment of the material collected during the operation.
