Agartala, 22nd August 2026 : A 17-day-old newborn has died following an injection administered at a special baby care unit in GBP Hospital here, with the family alleging serious lapses in the treatment process and questioning how a caregiver was allowed to administer the injection.
According to a relative of the deceased, the baby was given the injection four or five days ago. The relative alleged that the newborn lost consciousness and stopped breathing almost immediately after the injection was administered.
The family claimed that the injection was given not by a nurse or doctor but by a person described as a “special” attendant or caregiver responsible for looking after babies and maintaining cleanliness in the unit. The relative also alleged that the caregiver left the facility after the incident.
The family has questioned whether the caregiver had the authority or qualification to administer an injection. According to the relative, no doctor was present inside the room or ward when the injection was administered.
The relative said the baby’s mother and the caregiver were present at the time. The family is now seeking clarification from the hospital authorities regarding who administered the injection, whether the person was authorized to do so and why no doctor was reportedly present at the spot.
