23.31 MT of Tripura Tea Sent to Kolkata, Guwahati

Date:

Agartala, 11th September 2026 :   Tripura’s tea industry is witnessing renewed momentum, with 23.31 metric tonnes of tea dispatched to major markets in Kolkata and Guwahati from the Durgabari Central Tea Processing Factory under Bamutia.

Of the total consignment, 15.31 MT was sent to Kolkata and 8 MT to Guwahati. The consignment was formally flagged off by Industries and Commerce Department Secretary Kiran Gitte and other dignitaries at a programme held at Durgabari Tea Garden.

Speaking at the event, Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited (TTDCL), said the corporation currently manages five tea gardens, with around 9 lakh kg of tea produced annually from three of them.

According to Ghosh, tea produced by the corporation is primarily marketed through auctions in Kolkata and Guwahati. He said the sector had faced financial difficulties in the past as tea prices often remained below production costs.

He credited renewed government attention since 2018 with improving the condition of the industry. With greater monitoring of plantations and production and increased focus on quality, the average selling price of tea has risen substantially.

“Earlier, tea was sold at around Rs 70 to Rs 100 per kg, while the price has now increased to around Rs 200 per kg,” Ghosh said.

He also highlighted measures aimed at improving the socio-economic condition of tea workers. Besides providing 22 types of benefits, the government has distributed land pattas among tea workers and increased the daily wage to Rs 204.

The corporation is also working towards establishing a tea auction system within Tripura, which officials believe could reduce dependence on outside markets and generate fresh employment opportunities for tea producers, workers, traders and others associated with the sector.

The latest shipment is being viewed as another step towards strengthening Tripura’s position in the regional tea market.
