‘People Will Script History in 2028’: Tripura Cong MLA Says BJP Will Fall

Date:

Agartala, 13th September 2026 :  Tripura Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday claimed that the 2028 Assembly elections would mark the beginning of the BJP’s political decline in the state, asserting that people were increasingly looking towards the Congress.

Roy Barman said the Congress would contest the upcoming elections independently, recalling that the party had fought the 2023 Assembly polls in alliance with the CPI(M). “We are fighting it alone, and in the coming days, it will be the same,” he said.

He maintained that different elections in Tripura are fought on different issues. While the upcoming Village Committee elections would largely focus on the concerns of indigenous people, the TTAADC and Assembly elections would be fought on broader political and governance issues, he said.

The Congress leader alleged that around 500 party candidates were prepared to contest the Village Committee elections, but nearly 250 were allegedly forced to withdraw their nominations following threats and intimidation. He also claimed that FIRs had been registered in connection with such incidents.

Roy Barman alleged that around 35 per cent of the seats had been won uncontested by the ruling party, calling it detrimental to democracy. However, he cautioned against drawing conclusions about the 2028 Assembly polls based on the Village Committee election results.

Claiming that there was growing dissatisfaction with the BJP government, Roy Barman said unemployed youths, government employees, daily wagers and farmers were among those unhappy with the ruling party.

“People have seen CPI(M) and BJP, and now they want Congress,” he said, predicting a significant change in the political scenario ahead of the 2028 elections.
