Agartala, 14th September 2026 : A jewellery shop at Kali Bazar under the Bamutia police outpost was allegedly burgled after thieves cut through the shop’s tin roof and escaped with around 80 bhoris of silver ornaments and cash, triggering panic and resentment among local traders.
The incident took place at the shop owned by Amrit Debnath. According to reports, Debnath closed the shop as usual on Sunday night and returned home. During the night, unidentified miscreants allegedly cut open the tin roof and entered the premises. They reportedly ransacked the shop before fleeing with silver ornaments weighing approximately 80 bhoris and an unspecified amount of cash.
The theft came to light on Monday morning when Debnath arrived to open the shop. He reportedly found the roof damaged and the shop in disarray. Soon, local traders and residents gathered at the spot after learning about the incident.
The burglary has raised questions over security arrangements at the market, particularly the presence and effectiveness of night guards. Traders and residents expressed concern over how the thieves managed to carry out the operation despite the market reportedly having night-time security.
The local business community has demanded stronger security measures and questioned the functioning of the existing night guard system.
Police have initiated an investigation and are working to identify those involved. Traders have urged the authorities to arrest the culprits at the earliest and recover the stolen jewellery and cash.
