Agartala, 14th September 2026 : Tripura’s efforts to promote organic farming received a fresh boost on Monday with the dispatch of nearly 5,000 organically cultivated aromatic lemons to Kolkata.
The lemons, produced by the Jalja Farmer Producer Company (FPC) under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), were flagged off from the MOVCDNER office at AD Nagar by Apurba Roy, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
The programme was attended by Rajib Debbarma, Mission Director of the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA), Sanjib Debbarma, Deputy Director (West District), Assistant Directors Rakhi Debbarma and Maitri Guha, besides representatives of different FPCs and service providers.
The initiative is aimed at connecting Tripura’s organic farmers with markets outside the state. The Kolkata consignment is expected to create better marketing opportunities for farmers, enhance returns from organic cultivation and increase the visibility of Tripura’s organic produce in major markets.
Officials said such market linkages would play an important role in strengthening the organic value chain and encouraging farmers to take up commercial organic production.
A review meeting with representatives of various FPCs was also organised as part of the programme. The meeting discussed future cultivation strategies, including the selection of crops by individual FPCs and the amount of land to be brought under each crop. The exercise is intended to ensure planned production based on market demand and strengthen the state’s organic farming network.
