Crime Branch arrests key suspect Chandan Barman in Phensedyl racket

Date:

Agartala, 15th September 2026 :The Tripura Police Crime Branch has arrested Chandan Barman of Master Para, Agartala, in connection with the alleged Phensedyl trafficking racket uncovered at Agartala Railway Station, Badharghat.

Barman was arrested from Agartala on Tuesday and is reportedly suspected to be a key mastermind behind the racket. Investigators are now questioning him to establish the network involved in arranging, transporting and receiving the consignments. Police suspect that his interrogation may lead to the identification of several other persons linked to the operation.

The case stems from major seizures made at Agartala Railway Station on July 2, when two separate consignments of banned Eskuf cough syrup were recovered from parcel vans. In the first seizure, DRI officials, assisted by Assam Rifles and RPF personnel, recovered around 55,626 bottles of 100-ml Eskuf syrup valued at over Rs 6.54 crore. The consignment had reportedly originated in Katihar, Bihar. Subrata Deb, 34, was arrested while allegedly arriving to receive it.

A second and reportedly larger consignment was seized later the same day.

The developments have strengthened suspicions of an organised interstate trafficking network using railway routes in Tripura. Earlier, a Rs 5.4-crore Eskuf consignment was seized at Jirania Railway Station, leading to several arrests.

The Crime Branch is now probing the entire chain, including suppliers, receivers and possible facilitators.
