Agartala, 25th September 2026 : The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Friday staged a protest outside the State Election Office in Agartala, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Party workers also burnt an effigy of the CEC during the demonstration.
Addressing the gathering, Tripura Congress MLA and Congress Working Committee member Sudip Roy Barman alleged that the functioning of the Election Commission under Gyanesh Kumar had undermined democratic processes. He demanded strict action against the Chief Election Commissioner and alleged that electoral irregularities had taken place in the country.
Roy Barman also criticised what he described as the growing influence of cadre-based political parties, arguing that democracy should be strengthened through mass-based political participation.
“People should think about moving towards mass-based parties. We want the support and blessings of the people to work for the development of the country and the state,” Roy Barman said.
He further alleged that the Congress was preparing to intensify its movement if its demands regarding the Chief Election Commissioner were not addressed.
Roy Barman also raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that names of eligible voters were being removed from the voters’ list. He claimed that objections had been raised by two Election Commissioners regarding the process and alleged that changes in election-related laws had benefited the ruling BJP in several states.
The Congress leader reiterated the party’s demand for the resignation and arrest of Gyanesh Kumar and said the party would continue its campaign over the issue.
