Agartala, 27th September 2026 : A car owner has alleged police inaction after his vehicle was allegedly pledged to a person in Imphal without his knowledge or consent, after it had been rented out to another individual.
The vehicle owner, Karnajit Bhowmik, a resident of Charipara Shivnagar under Amtali police station, has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the alleged lack of action by Amtali Police. He claimed that despite submitting a written complaint, police have failed to take effective steps to recover the vehicle.
According to the complaint, Bhowmik had rented out his Maruti car bearing registration number TR-01-CF-0520 to Ashish Mia, a resident of Phultali. Bhowmik alleged that Mia subsequently pledged the vehicle to a youth from Imphal, Manipur, through his nephew, on the basis of an agreement deed.
Bhowmik claimed that the vehicle was pledged without his knowledge or permission and alleged that he was deliberately deceived in the matter.
After learning about the incident, Bhowmik said he sought an explanation from Mia but did not receive a satisfactory response. He subsequently approached Amtali Police and initially lodged a General Diary (GD) entry around four months ago. He later submitted a written complaint along with supporting documents.
According to Bhowmik, police had assured him that the matter would be investigated and that efforts would be made to recover the vehicle. However, he alleged that more than one-and-a-half months have passed since his written complaint without any visible action to recover the car.
He further claimed that despite making several visits to the police station, he did not receive a satisfactory response. He also alleged that he was asked to consider settling the matter.
Bhowmik has urged police to examine the applicability of relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 316(2), 316(5), 318(4) and 314, and take appropriate legal action.
He also questioned the role of Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Rana Chatterjee in the matter.
Speaking to the media on Sunday afternoon, Bhowmik said the vehicle had been purchased through a loan and that he was facing financial difficulties as the instalments continued to fall due. He claimed that representatives of the lending agency were regularly visiting his residence for repayment, while he was unable to use the vehicle or earn from it.
Bhowmik said the situation had caused him severe mental distress. He also made a serious statement expressing fear that, if the vehicle was not recovered, he might be left with no option but to take his own life.
He appealed to the police administration to intervene immediately, initiate appropriate legal action based on his complaint and take steps to recover the vehicle from Imphal and return it to him.
