Agartala, 30th September 2026 : Police in Agartala have seized more than 31 kg of suspected ganja in two separate operations in Malyanagar and Amtali, arresting three youths in connection with the recoveries.
In the first operation, Srinagar Police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid in the Malyanagar area and recovered 6.3 kg of ganja from a bag allegedly carried by a 23-year-old youth identified as Nayan Das, a resident of Manughat.
According to police, the youth was intercepted and searched, but no objectionable material was found during the body search. He was subsequently asked to open the bag he was carrying. Police found three packets wrapped in black material inside the bag. The packets allegedly contained suspected ganja, which was seized.
Police are questioning Das to determine the intended destination of the consignment and whether others were involved in the alleged transportation of the contraband.
In a separate late-night operation, Amtali Police seized around 25 kg of dry ganja from a white Aura car during naka checking on the bypass road near Amtali Police Station. Two 19-year-old youths, identified as Jit Deb and Bishal Deb, both residents of Chandinamura, were arrested.
Police said round-the-clock vehicle checking was underway at the naka point when the Aura, bearing registration number TR 01 BW 0764, was noticed moving suspiciously at around 1 am. When police signalled the vehicle to stop, the driver allegedly attempted to flee. Police pursued and intercepted the vehicle before conducting a search.
Two large bags containing around 25 kg of suspected ganja were allegedly recovered from the vehicle. The seized contraband has an estimated market value of around Rs 5 lakh, according to police.
Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jana Chatterjee said the vehicle came under suspicion during routine checking and the subsequent search led to the recovery.
During preliminary questioning, police reportedly learnt that the consignment had allegedly been collected from a border-area location and was intended to be taken to the Agartala railway station area, where it would allegedly be concealed before being transported by train to another state. Police said these details form part of the ongoing investigation and are yet to be established before the court.
Amtali Police have registered a suo motu case under the NDPS Act, bearing case number 109/2026. The two arrested youths are expected to be produced before the court, with police likely to seek their custody for further questioning.
Investigators are also examining the source of the seized ganja, its intended destination and whether other persons were involved in the alleged trafficking network. There have also been local allegations regarding the possible involvement of an influential person from the Charipara area, but police have not confirmed any such connection.
With the two operations, police have seized approximately 31.3 kg of suspected ganja and arrested three persons. Further investigation is underway.
