Minor girl dies by suicide, family alleges rape and harassment

Date:

Agartala, 7th October 2026 :   A 16-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide at her residence in the Konaban-Sitahala area after facing harassment and abuse allegedly linked to a romantic relationship, according to her family. Her relatives have lodged a complaint of rape and murder against Amit Biswas at Madhupur Police Station.

The deceased, identified as Tania Rudra Pal, was an eighth-grade student and was reportedly known locally as a talented student and cricket player.

According to her family, Tania had been in a relationship with Amit Biswas, son of Babul Biswas of Konaban Sitahala, for around eight to nine months. They alleged that Amit had initially developed the relationship by expressing romantic interest in her and that the relationship later became physically intimate.

The family further alleged that around three days before Tania’s death, Amit called her to his nearby residence late at night, where the two allegedly had sexual relations. After the matter came to the knowledge of their respective families, Amit allegedly changed his behaviour and subjected Tania to physical and mental harassment, including through phone calls.

Her family claimed that she was unable to withstand the alleged harassment and subsequently died by suicide by hanging herself at home.

The family has accused Amit of rape and murder and urged police to take stringent legal action. The allegations are yet to be established through investigation.

Locals claimed that Amit had previously faced allegations of harassing another girl who later died by suicide, while some residents also accused him of involvement in theft and mugging. These claims too are subject to police verification.

The incident has triggered tension in the Konaban-Sitahala area, with residents and the victim’s family demanding a thorough investigation and strict action if the allegations are proved.
