Tripura Electronic Media Society Demands Arrest of Accused in Alleged Attack on Three Journalists

Date:

Agartala,  10th  October 2026 :  The Tripura Electronic Media Society has expressed serious concern and strong resentment over the alleged attempt to murder three journalists by running them over with a vehicle in the GB area of Agartala. The organisation has demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and stringent legal action against those involved.

According to the allegations, journalists Chandan Dey, Shivananda Shil and Ajay Das were attacked on Wednesday night while returning home from their respective workplaces. All three sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Trauma Care Centre of GB Hospital for treatment.

On the following day, a delegation of the Tripura Electronic Media Society visited the hospital to enquire about the injured journalists’ medical condition. The delegation also met police officials at the GB outpost and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused, along with exemplary legal action against them.

However, the failure to arrest the accused even three days after the incident triggered widespread resentment among members of the journalist fraternity. Protesting the alleged police inaction, journalists staged a road blockade in the GB area on Saturday, demanding swift action in the case.

Senior police officials subsequently reached the spot and held discussions with the protesting journalists. Additional Superintendent of Police Dhruvanath assured them that all the accused would be arrested within the next 48 hours. Following the assurance, the journalists withdrew the road blockade.

In a statement, the Tripura Electronic Media Society emphasised that ensuring the safety and security of journalists is the responsibility of the administration. It described the alleged attack on media professionals as a matter of grave concern and called for an impartial investigation, the speedy arrest of all those involved and strict legal action against them.

Society president Pranab Sarkar warned that if the police failed to arrest the accused within the 48-hour deadline, as promised, journalists would be compelled to launch a larger protest movement.

Those present during the protest included Society president Pranab Sarkar, secretary Sourajit Pal, joint secretary Ranjit Debbarma, and members Manish Saha, Samaresh Dey, Abhishek Dey, Dipankar Pal and Hanif Ali, among others.

Reiterating its demand for immediate and effective intervention, the Tripura Electronic Media Society urged the administration to ensure the safety of journalists, conduct a fair investigation and bring the accused to justice without further delay.
