Agartala, 14th October 2026 : Allegations of illegal payments for allowing overloaded stone-laden vehicles to enter Dharmanagar town have surfaced, raising questions about the enforcement of restrictions imposed by the administration.
The administration has issued strict instructions prohibiting overloaded stone-laden vehicles from entering the town, citing concerns over road damage and the inconvenience caused to residents. Despite several enforcement drives, such vehicles allegedly continue to ply on the roads, prompting questions about the effectiveness of the restrictions.
On Tuesday night, drivers of some stone-laden vehicles allegedly claimed that they were allowed to pass through a checkpoint near Bagbasa after paying money. During questioning, some drivers alleged that payments of Rs 200 per vehicle were collected at night, while another driver claimed that the vehicle was allowed to proceed after paying Rs 100.
According to the drivers, vehicles were stopped at a barricaded checkpoint under the jurisdiction of Bagbasa Police Station. One driver, identified as Jibon from Karimganj, said his vehicle had been loaded at Surma Bari. Another driver reportedly mentioned Kashajhuria as the loading point.
The allegations have raised concerns over whether the restrictions are being enforced effectively and whether any unauthorised payments are being collected to facilitate the movement of overloaded vehicles.
The continued entry of such vehicles poses a potential threat to road infrastructure and can disrupt normal public life in Dharmanagar. Residents and commuters may face additional difficulties if heavy vehicles continue to use roads despite the administrative restrictions.
No official response from the police or the district administration was available at the time of filing this report.
