Tripura police must modernise to tackle emerging crimes, says CM Dr Manik Saha

Date:

Agartala, 21st  October 2026 :   Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday called for a more modern, skilled and people-oriented police force, stressing that emerging threats such as cybercrime, drug trafficking and offences against women and children require stronger policing capabilities.

Addressing the Police Commemoration Day programme in Agartala, attended by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Director General of Police G.S. Rao and other senior officials, Saha paid tribute to police and security personnel who died while protecting the country and maintaining public safety.

Emphasising the importance of public confidence in the police, the Chief Minister said effective law enforcement must go hand in hand with integrity, accountability and humane treatment of citizens. He urged police personnel to remain accessible to the public, respond sensitively to their concerns and perform their duties with courage and impartiality.

Saha said policing was not confined to preventing crime or maintaining law and order, but also involved safeguarding lives and property and extending assistance to people during difficult times.

He informed that 154 personnel from various police and security forces across the country had sacrificed their lives in the line of duty between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026. Although no Tripura Police personnel died on duty during this period, around 222 personnel of different ranks from the state force have made the supreme sacrifice over the years.

The Chief Minister also recalled the historical significance of Police Commemoration Day, observed every year on October 21 in memory of 10 police personnel who were killed in a confrontation with Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959. The team was led by Sub-Inspector Karam Singh.

The observance was designated in 1960, while the national-level tribute has been held at the Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, since 2012.

Highlighting the state government’s efforts to strengthen policing, Saha said special attention was being given to modernisation, operational effectiveness and improvements in the law-and-order system. He said the objective was to ensure a secure and peaceful environment for all residents while making police assistance available promptly whenever needed.

He expressed confidence in the commitment and professionalism of Tripura Police and urged personnel to uphold the highest standards of duty, discipline and public service.

Concluding his address, Saha paid homage to the fallen personnel and conveyed his condolences to their families, saying their courage and sacrifices would continue to inspire future generations to protect the people and safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and integrity.
