Abhishek Debroy questions opposition’s stand on EVMs, SIR; accuses Congress of double standards

Date:

Agartala, 26th October 2026 : Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy on Monday questioned the opposition’s repeated allegations against the electoral process, accusing Congress and other opposition parties of raising doubts over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and voter-list revisions selectively, depending on election results.

Responding to the controversy over Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s alleged objectionable remarks, Debroy launched a broadside against the Congress, claiming that the party’s political influence was declining as the BJP continued to strengthen its presence across the country.

He alleged that the opposition, unable to effectively challenge the BJP in electoral contests, was attempting to create political unrest and divert public attention through controversies and allegations of vote theft. According to him, remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his family reflected the opposition’s growing frustration.

Seeking to counter allegations of electoral manipulation, Debroy referred to the disqualification of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from Parliament. He also brought up the 1951–52 general elections and an incident involving the Rampur constituency, alleging that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had interfered in the electoral process.

The BJP leader also criticised what he described as the opposition’s attempts to encourage street mobilisation among young people, citing the recent movement in Bangladesh. Referring to Nehru and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, he alleged that opposition leaders were looking beyond the parliamentary democratic process to achieve their political objectives when electoral success remained elusive.

Addressing concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Debroy said the exercise was a regular process that had been conducted on several occasions in the past. He asserted that the public was aware of the nature of the exercise and the allegations being raised by opposition parties.

Drawing comparisons with the electoral situations in Kerala and West Bengal, Debroy alleged that opposition parties followed different standards depending on whether election results favoured them. He claimed that questions over EVMs and voter-list revisions tended to emerge when the outcome was unfavourable to the opposition, while similar objections were not raised when the results went in its favour.

Debroy’s remarks came amid the continuing political debate over electoral transparency, voter-list revision and the opposition’s allegations against the BJP and the election process.
