Agartala, 29th October 2026 : Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha has called for a united public movement against the BJP-led government, urging political parties, students, unemployed youths and various social groups to join hands to protect democratic rights and electoral freedom.
Speaking in Agartala on Thursday, Saha said the Congress was determined to defeat the BJP and strengthen democratic institutions through collective public action. He announced that the INDIA bloc would organise a march on October 30 from near Shishu Udyan to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), demanding safeguards for voters and transparency in the electoral process.
“The fight is not merely about politics; it is about saving democracy,” Saha said, alleging that attempts were being made to deprive eligible citizens of their voting rights through arbitrary deletions from electoral rolls. He also raised questions about reservation policies and electoral arrangements in the context of the upcoming municipal elections.
The Congress leader said the protesters would demand the restoration of voting rights to those allegedly excluded from electoral rolls and seek the removal and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He claimed that around eight parties associated with the INDIA alliance had extended support to the programme.
Saha appealed to educated unemployed youths, students, casual workers and candidates awaiting government appointments to participate in the movement. Referring to the prolonged wait of JRBT interview candidates, he accused the state government of failing to address employment-related grievances and alleged that shortcomings in the education sector were adding to public discontent.
He said the Congress campaign, ‘Save Democracy, Save the Vote, Save the Nation’, had been continuing for around one and a half months and was gaining public support. He also alleged that intimidation, fabricated cases and propaganda were being used to weaken opposition activities.
Expressing concern over press freedom and the functioning of democratic institutions, Saha urged journalists and concerned citizens to raise their voices against alleged violations of constitutional rights.
He further appealed to political parties, including individuals within the ruling establishment who share concerns about governance, to set aside partisan differences and join the movement.
Calling for greater participation from SC, ST and OBC communities, Saha said the initiative aimed to build a broad-based democratic platform across Tripura, with particular emphasis on protecting voting rights and ensuring accountability in governance.
