CPI(M) demands adequate central forces for fear-free municipal polls

Date:

Agartala, 29th October 2026 : CPI(M) has demanded the deployment of adequate central forces, including the CRPF and BSF, to ensure free, fair, peaceful and fear-free municipal elections in West Tripura.

The demand was raised by CPI(M) West Tripura district leaders, including Tapan Das, Pankaj Ghosh and Biswajit Deb, at a meeting convened by the District Magistrate and District Election Officer on October 28. The meeting discussed preparations for elections to Agartala Municipal Corporation, Jirania Nagar, Ranirbazar Municipal Council and Mohanpur Municipal Council.

Tapan Das urged the authorities to ensure the safety of candidates, proposers, polling agents and their families, prevent the entry of outsiders 72 hours before polling, install CCTV cameras and VVPAT machines, and provide equal campaigning opportunities to all parties. He also recalled alleged attacks on CPI(M) candidates during nomination filing in Jirania and Mohanpur in 2021.

Representatives of the Congress, CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc and Amra Bangali supported the demand for peaceful and impartial elections. The District Election Officer assured the meeting that necessary measures would be taken.
