Agartala, 2nd November 2026 : A pall of gloom has descended over Kumarghat subdivision following the death of a young man, identified as Sumit Dey, a resident of Purba Kanchanbari under Kumarghat Police Station, allegedly after experiencing emotional distress over a five-year romantic relationship.
According to family members, Sumit had been working in Bengaluru but suddenly expressed his desire to return home without explaining the reason. After reaching home, he reportedly told his family that his girlfriend, identified as Sneha, had stopped communicating with him and was allegedly no longer interested in continuing their relationship.
His family members said Sumit subsequently tried to contact her but received no response. The situation reportedly left him deeply distressed. He was later found hanging from a tree at around 8 am yesterday.
He was initially taken for medical attention to a local hospital in Kumarghat and subsequently referred to GB Hospital in Agartala, where he died.
Speaking to the media, Sumit’s relative Rita Dey claimed that the young man had left behind an audio recording on his mobile phone in which he reportedly expressed his desire for accountability for the suffering he had endured. The family has demanded action against the person they hold responsible for his death.
Rita said the family was aware of Sumit’s relationship and had never objected to it, as they believed both were committed to each other. She added that a formal written complaint would be submitted to the police after completion of the funeral rituals.
The circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations made by the family are yet to be independently established. Police investigation and examination of the alleged recording will be crucial in determining the facts of the case.
