Agartala, 5th November 2026 : In a fresh development in the stolen gold case, Bishalgarh police conducted a late-night raid at a jewellery shop in Boxanagar, near Kalamchaura Police Station, and arrested its owner, Uttam Banik, along with recovering stolen gold.
The operation followed an earlier raid in Bishalgarh, where another gold merchant was arrested on charges of possessing stolen gold. Police have so far arrested two persons allegedly involved in the theft and taken them into police remand for interrogation.
According to police sources, investigators questioned the arrested accused and, based on information obtained during interrogation, raided the jewellery shops where the stolen ornaments had allegedly been sold. The two shops identified by police are Surya Jewellers in Bishalgarh market, reportedly owned by Choton, and Tarun Chandra Jewellers in Boxanagar, owned by Uttam Banik.
During questioning, one of the shopkeepers reportedly admitted that the stolen ornaments had been brought to his shop for weighing and valuation before being purchased. He stated that the sellers initially approached him to determine the value of the gold and subsequently returned with two rings for sale.
Police officials confirmed that both jewellery shopkeepers had admitted that the ornaments were sold at their respective establishments. Two shopkeepers have been detained and are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police further stated that the majority of the stolen gold involved in the case had already been recovered. Investigators are now examining the possible involvement of other persons in the gold disposal network.
The police said further action would be taken after the interrogation and investigation are completed. The identities of other suspected persons have not yet been disclosed as the investigation remains underway.
