Onions sold at Rs 30 per kg at Sonamura, draw large crowds

Date:

Agartala, 7th November 2026 : Residents of Sonamura thronged a special onion sale counter on Saturday as onions brought from Nashik were sold at just Rs 30 per kilogram, nearly half the prevailing local market price of Rs 60–Rs 65.

Speaking to reporters, Nilkantha Sarkar, a representative involved in the distribution, said the onions were supplied through the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) as part of an initiative to provide essential commodities at affordable rates to the general public.

He said around 120 bags, each weighing approximately 40–45 kg, had been brought to Sonamura for distribution. The onions were of good quality, he added.

Sarkar said the initiative was aimed at providing relief to ordinary consumers and preventing middlemen or wholesalers from purchasing the entire stock. Purchase limits would be maintained to ensure that more people could benefit.

He further stated that the NCCF would continue organising such sales at different locations to make essential commodities available to the public at reasonable prices.
