Agartala: Oct 12. In a startling turn of events, more than 100 pigs made an illegal entry into Tripura through the Tripura Sundari Express arriving from Delhi on Wednesday night, defying strict directives of the state government. The breach of regulations has raised concerns over the potential spread of diseases that could devastate local pig farms.

According to Dr. Rajesh Shyam Das, Deputy Director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department (ARDD), the entry of pigs from outside the state is strictly prohibited to safeguard the health of local pig populations. Diseases prevalent in pigs from external regions pose a significant threat to Tripura’s pig farming industry.

Dr. Radheshyam Das, another ARDD Deputy Director, swiftly mobilized administrative officials and contacted the Railway Protection Force (RPF) upon receiving the alarming information. However, due to time constraints, the pigs could not be detained in Dharmanagar.

He emphasized that legal action will be taken against those responsible for bringing the pigs into the state once they reach Agartala. This incident marks the first known instance of pigs entering Tripura via rail.

Pig farmers who have availed government loans to run their farms are now gripped with panic over the potential consequences of this unauthorized entry. If the pigs are infected, there is a serious risk of an outbreak that could ravage their farms.
