Agartala, 21st December 2023: The Tribal Student Union (TSU) has submitted a memorandum to the Janajati Kalyan Department, outlining four key demands, including the disbursement of examination stipends for school and college students. This move comes in the wake of a tragic incident where Siari Jamatia, a student of Bijay Kumar School in the capital, took her own life at the ST Hostel in Agartala city on December 13.

After presenting the memorandum, the TSU delegation emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation. General Secretary of TSU, Sujit Tripura, expressed concern over the lack of a proper investigation into the suicide, stating, “It’s been a week, and there is still no proper investigation into the suicide. Due to this, 150 students have refrained from attending classes for more than a week.” Tripura continued, “More than a week has passed, yet the administration has not made any arrangements to bring back the students. Therefore, TSU is demanding a thorough investigation into this incident and urging authorities to facilitate the return of students to school.”

In addition to seeking justice for the deceased student, the TSU leaders are demanding the appointment of wardens and guards in every ST hostel, emphasizing the need for enhanced security and supervision.

The TSU’s memorandum highlights the pressing issues affecting tribal students, urging swift action from the Janajati Kalyan Department to address the demands and ensure the well-being of students in educational institutions. The TSU remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of tribal students in Agartala.
