Agartala, January 19: The residents of Teliamura Krishnapur area staged a protest on the Assam-Agartala National Highway on Friday, demanding immediate action against the frequent attacks of wild elephants in their locality.

The protest disrupted the traffic on the highway, and the convoy of MLA and Janjati Kalyan Minister Bikash Debbarma was among those stranded on the road.

According to a local resident, the wild elephants have been raiding their houses and crops, and causing panic and sleeplessness among the villagers. He said that the government has failed to provide any relief or compensation to the affected people, and that they have no option but to protest.

The protest drew the attention of the authorities, and a large police force, along with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Police Officer and the Officer-in-Charge of Teliamura police station, reached the spot to pacify the agitators.

They assured them that the government will take necessary steps to address their grievances, and requested them to clear the road. The protest was called off after an hour, and the traffic resumed on the highway.
