Agartala, 2nd February 2024 : A 23-year-old youth was brutally killed by a shop owner in broad daylight on Friday for teasing the shop owner, identified as Samrat Debnath, over his girlfriend in the Amtali area near Agartala city.
West District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar said that the incident resulted from a hot altercation between two youths concerning the girlfriend of the accused, Samrat Debnath.
“This afternoon in the Amtali Bazar area next to Agartala-Sabroom National Highway, under Amtali Police Station, a heated altercation started between the accused Samrat Debnath, owner of a tire shop, and an employee of another shop next to him identified as Sayan Bhowmik, the deceased, about Samrat’s girlfriend. At some point, the argument turned violent. Later, in a rage, Samrat assaulted Sayan on his head with a hammer and rod. Immediately, Sayan fell to the ground and died on the spot,” said the SP.
He also mentioned that at that time, nearby shopkeepers witnessed the incident and attempted to intervene. However, due to the weapons in Samrat’s hands, no one dared to approach him.
“Later, information was given to Amtali police station. On receiving the information, a large police force and a forensic team rushed to the spot. Police recovered the body of Sayan, which was lying in a pool of blood, and sent it to Tripura Medical College and BRAM Teaching Hospital,” he added.
Meanwhile, the police arrested the accused Samrat Debnath, seized all the weapons from his possession, and presented him before the court, seeking police remand for further interrogation.
